As 2018 ends I look back on another year of my photography journey.
Looking back on 2018 I see it as a year of evolution; I developed my macro and detail photography from 2017, experimented with new bits of kit and built upon my printing knowledge with my own printer.
Other highlights included my second solo exhibition, visits to Bath, London, Anglesey, Santander and the Lake District, getting a new Fuji camera and photographing insects at National Museums Liverpool, which I hope to return to this year.
So without further ado, here was my 2018...
January - Liverpool Festival Gardens...
...I started the year by carrying on where I ended 2017 by shooting macro and details...
...the cold snap provided me with these frosty details.
Looking out for details wherever possible. This one was taken at the Port Sunlight Garden Centre...
...while this was taken at the Sefton Park Palmhouse.
February - One of my favourite macro photos. I learned some new skills with this one.
March - My second solo exhibition at 92DegreesCoffee…
…it combined older and newer images, most of which were printed by myself.
Light painting on return from The Photography Show…
…while riding passenger in a car, I set my camera to a long enough exposure to create swirling patterns from lights of cars.
Details from Liverpool's Chinatown. These photos would go on to be significant later in the year for the ‘A Liverpool Bestiary’ project.
April - A weekend trip to Bath…
…we visited landmarks like The Royal Crescent…
…and Pulteney Weir.
Reflections in the awning of Birmingham New Street Station.
May - Macro photography at a nearby garden centre.
Detail of a monkey puzzle tree...
...which I then pieced together to make new imagery.
Nose of my parent’s dog.
Museum of the Moon drew marvelled crowds to the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.
June - First guest blog for Wilkinson Cameras about my printing journey…
…I enjoyed printing my own images, trying out new papers and doing print giveaways.
A nosey pony at a nearby allotment in Liverpool.
July - Admiring Kew Gardens during a trip to London…
…where I stepped inside The Hive…
… and stumbled surprisingly across an iguana.
One of my most significant camera purchases of recent years - the Fuji X-T2.
August - A day out to the Wirral, starting at Claremont Farm...
..before going to Ashton Park where this eagle was on display.
A brief return to shooting some macro of an unexpected off-shoot from a succulent plant on our window ledge.
A day out to Anglesey in North Wales with friends...
...we explored Porth Wen Brickworks...
...followed by chilling out on Lligwy beach...
...I experimented with light painting once again on our way back to Liverpool.
September - The ‘Impact’ print conference at Santander, Spain...
...my partner (Hannah Fray) and Neil Morris were exhibiting their project ‘A Liverpool Bestiary’ at this conference…
…I was fortunate to take part...
...with my creation made up of details from Chinatown and a feather for the background texture.
Outdoor escalators were a surprise to me…
…and a coastal walk was a highlight of the holiday.
October - Giant Spectacular returned to Liverpool for the last time...
…Giant Spectacular drew a huge crowd, the likes of which I’ve never seen in Liverpool!
My second guest blog for Wilkinson Cameras, this time about mirrorless vs DSLR cameras.
November - A return to London.
Textile artwork by Anni Albers at the TATE Modern.
Photographing insects at the Entomology department of National Museums Liverpool...
...I'm hoping this will become a long term project.
Photographing artwork for my friend Henry Finney.
Another brief return to macro photography.
Annual holiday to the Lake District with my family…
…this time I concentrated on photographing water at different shutter speeds.
December - New Year light in Liverpool's Chinatown as the year draws to a close.
Overlooking Black Rock Sands Beach in Porthmadog, North Wales.
A little competition win where a photo I took at the start of the year was used by my local Green Party for their Christmas card. This photo bookends the year nicely!
…and that was my 2018! Thank you for checking out this blog and for your continued support this year. I wish you all a great 2019 and I hope you enjoy more of my photography this year!
